Has anyone attended a Cross-Cultural Solution trip, and have any advice?

Has anyone attended a Cross-Cultural Solution trip, and have any advice?
I'm looking into particiapating next summer after I graduate high school. I'd like some advice or opinions or anything that might help me decide if it would really be worth the money and all. I've been leaning towards going to Brazil for two weeks and helping in a hospital possible; I'm a teen volunteer (candystriper) here in the United States. This is a hard decision for me to make, so any advice is greatly appreciated. I've always wanted to try something like what this program has to offer.

Travelling internationally is AWESOME. However, be very clear about the organization you want to go with. Investigate that they will give you what you are paying for. Not all of them are as legitimate as they say. If they are really about the learning, they will encourage you to talk to former participants, although ultimately the experience will be what you make it. There are a number of organizations that will support you in learning and travelling overseas. Have you looked into church opportunities? Check out the websites to start your search and verify the organization: www.freethechildren.com www.idealist.org www.charityvillage.com Start learning the language of the culture and the issues of the country (i.e. gender inequality, HIV/AIDS) and clarify (specify) your passion so that you can tailor your learning to impact your continued post secondary studies. Good Luck, you are on the right track.

Average salary in Brazil and cost of living?

Average salary in Brazil and cost of living?
Dear friends, I have the chance to do my Internship in Brazil between february 2009 and july 2009. The thing is that the Agency I have contacted with told me that the payment is going to be between 300 and 600 Brazilian Reals and that should be around 130 USD. I know that the internship is always low paid, and that's the way it should be. But I am worried cause they told me that 130 dollars will be enough for me to cover my rent and food. Is it true? Can I make it with that amount of money? Thank you for you answers and time. Z they didn't specify wether is for a week or a month. But if they say average salary in Brazil si between 300 and 600 reals, I am worried they mean a month. Anyway did you mean that 130 USD is ok if it is per week?

I am afraid this is the reality of internship, just between 300 and 600 reais/month. Mostly, who gets this salary, is still at parents home so, they do not have big expenses. And when it is a actual salary, people has other part-time jobs. So, I don't mean to be negative, but if this is all they can offer to you, and based on the life level you already have and on your future plans, I would say get a real and strong pros and cons, before coming. As my personal opinion, if I was in your shoes, probably won't take it.

I am Brazilian and life here is normal, change the language is Portuguese and the money is real, since the issue of women, there are women in every way and here there is just carnival, football and violence, as many think! Hope this helps in your decision! Sorry my bad English, the teaching here is not very good!

I'm from Brazil, I love living here, I live in and plan to go live in Minas Gerais. Minas Gerais is one of the best places in Brazil, many feel that the best is Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais But rather, because there everybody respects.

In Brazil most of the careers is not valued. The education also not. Only if you go for great urban centers as Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul (Big Rio of the South, that is until one of the closest climates than we have of you with hot summers and winters with snow!)The streets are not SO clean. More has exceptions as the streets of Curitiba that you don't see nor a paper in the ground. habit: Carnival, rice and bean

Can anyone that lives or has good knowledge about Brazil tell me what an average person makes per month in Brazilian currency in these 3 areas Florianopolis, Rio De Janeiro, and Sao Paulo? Also i have read that Florianopolis has the best quality of life and very little crime...is this do to the fact that the people there have more money or the job rate is good what exactly makes it so great, from what i understand Florianopolis people mainly depend on tourists for their income. Thanks any info would help.

Its almost impossible to say how much money people make working in Brazil, it depends in what you do. If you work as receptionist, or a bartender the medium salary is R$800,00, then depends on where you are working. I live in Florianopolis, and I think that there is less crimes because it is a very new city and it also is much less populated than Rio and São Paulo. Florianopolis is a very good city, you must visit if you come to Brazil.
