Help!I know it sounds weird but how can I convince my parents let me travel on my own?
The funny part is I'm 21 years old,I study medicine abroad, away from my family and home since I was 17.However,my parents still think that they should treat me as if I were 15..The thing is I'm from Greece and I want to start traveling on my own, beginning from Istambul.I have been traveling with my dad since I was 12 in conference-trips in places like Brazil,Indonesia,South Africa, etc. Anybody would ask why do I need my parents' approval to go since I already have the money to make this trip but the thing is that they will immediately say no in the moment I will tell them and their biggest argument as always is gonna be financial blackmail(eg/ "if u want to do things that we disapprove, maybe we should stop paying for your studies, for the house u live in,etc")How should I convince them to "let" me go?I just don't want drama and argues...

If your 21 then it's just a case of however you feel it will go down best and what you want the outcome to be. You can either tell them straight that your going and they'll have to learn to accept it, or you can live with their decision and stay at home so as not to bother them and keep financial aid. Nobody on here is going to be able to tell you how to convince your parents. You need to just think about it, and make your mind up about what you want to do.

It's a Greek thing, I have found they are very controlling, my daughter married one I would advise tho to stay away from the arab countries as they are not the safest area's around How about Asia or Australia-NZ? Singapore is a beautiful country

Well . I would say become financially independent. Once your school studies are done and you are no longer "bound" to your parents. Other option is let them know how you feel dont say things like you do this and you never let me etc. but start like I would like to .. I feel like .. etc.

hey, this happen all the time to me. My parents used to be the same. my solution is that i try to SHOW them that I'm a grown up, i could do everything on my own. Tell them if everybody could let their children go travel why can't your parents. This issues would take sometimes to get better. You should talk to your parents but try to prevent all the arguement.

I keep getting mixed opinions on crime in brazil, is it really that bad?

I keep getting mixed opinions on crime in brazil, is it really that bad?
People say oh, don't be ignorant, dont wear flashy clothes/jewelry, flash money around or electronics and you will be good....but I don't do that anyways but feel even if I don't I will still be targeted for being a tourist who primarily speaks english lol I think since I have never left the country before, hearing all the stories of murder, robberies, kidnappings and much higher rates in a place where you don't speak the language very well and are a target it makes it that much more scarier to me. People say oh Rio De Jenario and Sao Paul are really safe, then others tell me Rio is at war right now and not safe....and Sao has a high crime rate for robberies, etc I've heard stories about unofficial taxi cabs

    its bad.

If you tell people your name is moneybags, you'll never see the light of day. I spent a week in Rio two years ago. I just stayed out of the favelas, and was fine. Rio is a beautiful city, and you would be foolish to pass on an opportunity to visit.
    3 :
Well, I live in São Paulo, and can tell that it's a big city, with big city problems like crime. If you choose a good neighborhood you will be fine. Avoid favelas (slums) and don't flash.

I am from Brazil and I love visiting many different cities in it. I have to say Sao Paulo and especially Rio de Janeiro are the only places in Brazil I NEVER felt safe. I returned from my trip stressed out because I had the feeling I always had to watch my back. I think the mainly problem with tourists is that they like to visit favelas (the poor neighborhoods) for some unknown reason and those places are ruled by drug dealers and weapon dealers. Then again, if you plan on leaving at night for some night club or bar, Rio de Janeiro has this many tunnels and sometimes drugger close it, making the traffic get stuck inside it, and rob everyone. I am not saying it is a bad place. In fact Rio is one of the most cities I have ever been too, but it lacks of security. Sao Paulo never attracted me all that much, but it is safer.

You think I should travel to Brazil alone?

You think I should travel to Brazil alone?
I speak portuguese so the language its not a problem...well I dont know all their slangs but that can be solved...PLUS, I would have to be translating which can be annoying. The thing is that I am tired of making up excuses for myself on why I cant go...by next summer the latest, I have to go...the thing is that my friends dont have money- I work and I am barely getting by but I can manage. I am thinking of going to Rio and Sao Paolo- save money for what I will spend there cash and put the hotel and flight on my credit card. I know about safety: dont walk with jewelry outside...ANY HINTS WILL BE WELCOME! yes...but I dont know anyone who will wanna go...

I know exactly how you feel... I love to travel, and haven't really been fulfilling my desires because I have friends who aren't interested or are always broke. And I prefer to have someone to go with, especially since I don't know anyone outside of my home state... What you and I need are travel buddies...haha. Since you know the language and can communicate, that's not an issue. Just be sure to avoid walking down side streets and alleyways alone, and always be aware. I know it's typically harder for females to travel alone, since guys can be all over them... But I hope that you can make the trip and have fun!

Being able to afford to travel is great, but you need to think seriously about the risks. Rio is not a place I would recommend for a single woman to travel alone to unless she had friends there or was meeting others in an organised group trip. It all sounds great when you see all the pictures, but the reality is often different. Why don't you consider travelling somewhere your friends can afford to go, or get them to aim to save with you for a group visit. There is safety in numbers!!

Lux, don't worry about the language, everybody speaks English in Brazil! Have a nice trip!

Why is the US census so obsessed with the Asian race?

Why is the US census so obsessed with the Asian race?
As an Asian American, I have a few problems with the "put Taiwanese on the census". First of all, why is the US census so concerned with what "type" of asian we are? Why are the options: -white -black -native -asian: Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Viet, Indian, Phillipino, etc...??? Why are they so concerned with only 4.5% of the population? Are they trying to create divisions amongst us? Is this data used to further discriminate against certain asian groups? Something smells fishy. Why do they want us to be so specific about our ethnicity but not the ethnicity of other races? There are recent Black immigrants from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, etc... Not all Hispanics are from Mexico, they can be from Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, etc...What about Arabs? It's very odd that no other race, besides Asian are being counted with such detail and specifics. Think about it. If you put "Chinese" on the form, then they know where the majority of Chinese communities are, they know how much you make and other personal information. They can post news stories about how Chinese people are so "wealthy" or "taking jobs" to create hatred and fear of Chinese people. Furthermore, they can divide the Asian community or divide Asians and other races to create conflict. They can also use this information to discriminate against certain Asian groups. They can create SEA vs. NEA animosity. You have to question why they want to be so specific when it comes to "Asian" but not any other groups. Could it be because Asia is starting to challenge western dominance? Is it because Asians are the most successful race in America? Are we the new Jews? Why should race matter so much when it comes to knowing personal information about how much money you make or how many children you have? But there is definitely a hidden agenda to find out as much information on us Asians as possible. Their intentions are not to benefit us, that's for sure. I am not promoting lying on the census. But to only put down "Asian" and nothing more as a sign or solidarity and unity. Why should they know our specific ethnicities? So they can use it against us? No way, I don't want my community or lifestyle to be targeted. I don't want further discrimination against Asians. If the census had a special option under "White" for "Jew" everybody would be saying "that's discrimination!" The problem with trying to categorize different "types" of Asians is that it creates discord. Nowadays you have these sick asiaphiles making videos or blogs about different types of Asian by focusing on certain body parts, like eyes, or saying how "Thai women are giving, but Japanese women are beasts in bed"....All of a sudden, all these White people think they are experts on Asians. It is reminiscent of how Japanese were given honorary "white" status by Europe and America. It further alienated japan from the rest of Asia and created disunity amongst different Asian nations so that they were weak and subject to western imperialism. One time I was on a plane and this white man and stewardess were talking about how Chinese people were smelly and uncivilized and how she preferred serving Japanese people. All the while that white man's Japanese wife was nodding her head in agreement. They must of thought I was either Japanese or couldn't understand them. Either way, it divides Asians and creates conflict so that Japanese refuse to cooperate with Chinese or Koreans refuse to cooperate with Japanese, etc...It makes Asians weak so that Westerners can swoop in and take advantage. The reason why Whites and Blacks have so much power in America is because they are for the most part United. Asians are not because we have so many internal divisions and conflicts which makes us easy targets. One recent example were the Asian students being attacked in a Philidelphia highschool, but the district refusing the acknowledge it as a hate crime. So I am initiating a new movement amongst Asian Americans. We need to stand up in solidarity and show America that we will are united as ONE and will not tolerate discrimination against our fellow Asian brothers and sisters. That is why Asian unity is so important and one step is to only put down "Asian" on the census and nothing more.

tl;dr but seriously, if i could write that much for essays, i'd be so happy. edit: census man: oooo~ that asian guy has a 16 year old daughter~
        4 :
They want to know how many people they can count on to provide all the technical, medical and scientific innovation in the future. From this they can also deduce who will shoulder the tax burden for the irresponsible people in the country.
        5 :
Whats wrong with being specific?..I wish 'Black'were givin more specific options for ethnicity..We should be trying to move past 'race'..
        6 :
Well, the US census defines Arabs, Berbers and other North African groups as Caucasian. As for Asians being broken into different groups its to record the increase of immigration from the most populated continent in the World. Also whats your definition of Asian? Because a lot of the times Indians aren't included in the definition so that also leaves a lot out of problems of unity your talking about.
        7 :
You have a Pan Asian philosophy which would never go amongst Asian people. They are much to nationalistic.
        8 :
I couldn't agree more! and i heard about that Philadelphia thing too and I'm appalled that the school administration hasn't taken action. I remember a while back, a teacher said i don't understand the meaning of "asian pride" since different types of asians are divided. i agree somewhat b/c lots of asians are still divided. but i'm glad that there are people like you and me who are beyond that.
        9 :
I am half east indian, and the rest of me is german and mongolian (technically i'm more asian than white) but I agree with you. on the census i usually check asian and white....but i agree that this whole specific thing is odd...when they aren't being specific for anyone else. For me it's weird, because for the asian group, I'm more than one, and I think it's annoying, and I feel like they want to know TOO much when it comes to asian. I agree 100% with you! (i hope you choose my answer ^___^ )

It has nothing to do with racism. The 2 countries with the largest population worldwide are also the 2 fastest growing economies and I wouldn't be surprised if also the fastest growing group of immigrants. They are both on the Asian continent. You guessed right, India and China.
