don't we at least owe it to our-self( the whole world) to save Amazon?

don't we at least owe it to our-self( the whole world) to save Amazon?
even if one doesn't care for Brazil and the indigenous people who live in in the Amazon rain forests ; should we care at least for our own sake and our family.? doesn't it's benefits exceed all the ie; wood and soy it produces? doesn't it produce most of the oxygen we all breath? it is a priceless treasure with many unknown species and remedies for many diseases ie; cancer. internationally speaking ,why don't we get creative and save the Amazon? how much money would they make by cutting trees? why not all countries contribute and pay for not cutting down the trees? ie; Amazon is producing oxygen and has to get compensated for it we tend to spend money on weapons and other types of pathological means. why couldn't we afford saving such a priceless treasure? http://ipsterraviva.net/tv/wsfbrazil2009/currentNew.aspx?new=1280 Sean H : may be you didn't read all my question! they are helping you since without those trees you would be dead. just help yourself by saving the Amazon! many plants that can help you to have a healthier life. do a favor for yourself by saving the Amazon! Bruno: thank you very much for the link.one wonders why we can't afford to buy all the Amazon since it is very cheap and affordable £50 ($100) buys a whole acre and protects it forever. £25 saves 2000 square metres (half an acre). See area converter. The habitats you help buy are protected as nature reserves, owned and managed by local organisations.

I love 'Amazon Women on the Moon' what a great movie
2 :
will the amazon people save me if I'm ever in trouble ?
3 :
I would think so, yes, it needs preserving.
4 :
Currently around 13% of the the Amazon rainforest is designated as protected. They are doing all they can, but the production of lumber and soy has almost single-handedly turned Brasil from a third-world country to an emerging super-power. The country has to balance its economic and enviromental needs. I agree though, that more international pressure should be put on their government, seeing as how the Amazon basin significantly effects the weather and climate of the entire globe.
5 :
Not just ourselves, but our children and future generations. Especially when one considers the biodiversity of the rainforest, and the inflationary effect of deforestation on climate change.
6 :
Yes, we should try to save the Amazon. It is said the cutting there is destroying thousands of acres of forest each day. The value of those forests is either not understood by the people involved or they don't care. These trees are not only greatly involved with our climate and the very air we breathe, but they are the source of medical discoveries that provide the medicines that cure many diseases, to say nothing of the animal species involved Not only that, but we should make an effort to save our own forests, too. George W. Bush has allowed lumbering in our forested areas, with roads and trails and the general activity that goes on when huge trucks start plowing through forestland. Also, the changing climate has caused many more forest fires that destroy this priceless heritage. Firefighters say that these fires are so hot they are destroying the roots and prohibit new growth and that much of our West may be arid desert in years to come. Whether or not you believe in Global Warming, our very lives depend upon our trees. Some people are uneducated about the importance of greenery in our existence. They toss out ridicule with words like "treehugger," not realizing that the oxygen they breathe is dependent upon forestry in our world. As the world's population rises and greedy developers plunder our forests, we are one step closer to destroying our planet and our lives. "Save the Amazon" should be a rallying call to all who care about the future of our world.
7 :
Who is this 'we' refering to. I don't mind, yet, 'we' are not the only ones - of the industrialized world to have destroyed our own backyards and now 'demand' ala 'preservation' style - stop from destroyin the Amazon. It is US that dammed the Colorado River and are currently redirecting water too the desert on behalf of corporate agriculture drying out real farmers. We even direct water to Sin City for (what)..

How can I get sent back to my own country?

How can I get sent back to my own country?
I'm living in Brazil now, but I'm from Texas. The problem is, I'm not making any money and I'm living rather poorly. The only food that I can afford is rice and a few other things sometimes. So I literally have a diet of rice. I'm starting to become so skinny and without energy to do anything. I can't afford a plane ticket,to go back home and my family cannot help either. Most of my money goes to rent, which is for a terrible house with no doors and the kitchen is in the garage...my roommates are terrible people and so loud that I literally get around 4 hours of sleep per night. How can I get shipped back to the US? Is there something that I can do with the embassy?

go to US Embassy or to the Consulate and plead hardship. they may advance you airfare, but it's a loan and not a gift.
2 :
I do hope you're not a minor! If you are then go straight to the embassy. If you are not, try to accept that you will be in that situation for a bit longer probably. But don't panic. Panic tends to blur our understanding. Just retrace in your mind the steps that you took to get there; that always helps and it gives you more will power to keep on going. While not knowing the particulars of your situation, I would advice that you simply make a bit more effort to procure a little job somewhere. I would also suppose that you know the language; this will help make things less difficult. I would also advice you ask for an appointment to be seen at the U.S. embassy. Try as hard as you can to obtain interview and explain entire situation. I do hope you are familiar with CRAIGSLIST. If you're not, just type it in on internet. Type in CRAIGSLIST, Brazil; it'll probably be easier. I just did so now in order to make sure that Craigslist is also available there. In the meantime that you get interview at embassy, try checking as much jobs as possible in Brazilian city you live, and also check for shared/rooms, and other rentals, and see what you come up with. I just noticed that some are in English. If nothing else works, try looking up TEXAS government officials, such as the Congressmen from your city in Texas. And, even try the Senators. Good luck!

The tropicalness and the palm trees and just walking on the street at night with warm weather and safely with my cousins. Well im 12 now and i barely have family here. and i hate the cold and i just love brazil. the different culture and places to go. i love to live a simple life. Help me how can i convince my parents to go back or maybe make sf like brazil

i dont think that you can convince your parents to go back.. if i were you id just try to make the best of san fran and move there when your done with school..
4 :
act like a homosexual and they might move back. SF is the homosexual capital of the world.
5 :
ask if you can go live with your cousins without your parents girl or atleast ask for a year down there
6 :
you're gonna be homesick. it's a given. cant make any place like any other place - just aint gonna happen. that said, i'm sure you have mementos of brazil - try to give those a little attention every day.
7 :
just think of sf as brazil except for palms u have lamp posts and and buildings as concret jungles i hope i helped

That's a sad tale my friend :( Do you have friends and family in Goiania? Or anywhere in Brazil? Maybe you could talk to your parents about letting you spend the summer with them! I know summer seems like a long ways off, but I doubt your parents would want you to be gone on Christmas break.. Unless your school offers any kind of homeschool program--my mom's highschool offered that-. Where they sent the work with her as she traveled, and she did it and sent it back for them to grade. But most schools don't offer anything like that -- and even if they did, your parents would probably be uncomfortable with it. I know Summer is a long ways off, but that gives you something to look forward to! Something to live for :) Plus, you have a long time to convince them if they don't buy into it at first, right? Until then, there are a lot of fun things to do in the fall/winter! I know it's cold...corn mazes are always fun in Autumn, if you get a few of your friends together on a weekend or something. And halloween is coming up, which is full of fun trick-or-treating activities and whatnot. Snow will be on the ground soon, which makes everything perfect for sledding, skiing, snowmobiling, snowforts and fights, ice skating..i just love the winter! I remember this saying once....if you can't have what you want, want what you have! ;)
9 :
Try to make the most of what you have in San Fran - the education, the different cultures. Try to pick some things you do like about living in SF. Do you know any other Brazilians there? If not, there must be some clubs or something, so you can spend time with people that might remind you a bit of home. That would seem like the first step to making SF feel more like Brazil. You'll always have a chance to go back in future if you still want to, so do the things that will help you achieve that easily when you are older and the time comes e.g. being able to speak Br Portuguese properly (and / or any language they might speak in Goiania). One day you will get the chance to return, just remember that at the moment your parents are probably just trying to do what is best for you all right now. And one last thing since you mention the weather, I am from Britain where we have more grey and cold than San Francisco everyday and it sucks!! So think yourself lucky!
10 :
It must have the same effect to your parents. The economy is what make most people leave their natural environment. I suggest you try to get used to it and hope that one day when you are old enough to look after your self you move back there at the risk of becoming poorer.
11 :
I know what you mean. My grandparents sold a camp they had in the Bahamas 25 years ago. I still want to go back in time and relive happy times there. You at least only have another two or three years before you can become an exchange student and go back to Brazil for school.

Is getting open source software a good idea?

Is getting open source software a good idea?
My husband and I are buying a laptop (a Dell) for his nephew in Brazil. I can get a refurbished one for pretty cheap but it doesn't come with anything except the Microsoft XP Pro OS. Brazil is an open-source country so do I need to put Freeware or OpenOffice.org on it? Also, if we do get the open source software, how compatible will it be with programs like MSN Messenger and such? The less money we have to spend, the better, but we want to make sure we get the right software for him (and us so we can talk to him). Would it be better to get one without an OS as well, and get something else instead? I would be setting it all up for him here as I don't really know how tech-savvy he is. If you have any other ideas, please feel free to share. Thanks!!

Like anything that you get for free you have to be careful. You get what you pay for.
    2 :
if he isnt really tech savvy, then get him closed source. open source is for people that know what they are doing.
    3 :
yes ur on the right track imo ... get the OS with it or that will just be a headache ... u could pirate an OS but thats illegal :) .... anyway, yes , open source will be fine ... openoffice is fine ... almost anything u want to do u can get freeware for ... and there shouldnt be any incompatibility problems if u stick to popular freeware ...
    4 :
Do you actually understand the concept of Open Source Software? The only thing that differs from closed source software, is the price and the fact the code is open. You can put anything you like on the Laptop. If you don't want to pay, use open source software. If you can't find it in Open source, then you'll have to pay. Things like OO (Open Office) will work fine with closed source software like MSN.
    5 :
YES!, openoffice is amazing.. msn messenger has nothing to do with the opensource software you install, it runs on its own within the windows enviroment. if you plan to dump windows then get ubuntu, it's a great linux distrobution. i can't remember the name of the chat client that's on linux but it basically does all the chat programs in one (yahoo, msn, icq, aol, etc..) it's really cool because you only have to have one portal to talk to people on different services :) EDIT: i see someone thumbdowned the guy that said opensource is for people that know what they are doing, that can be partially true for some programs, i mean mounting drives and crap like that isn't something a windows user can do right off the bat.
    6 :
It's a very good Idea, but the key is getting the files from a good source like OpenCD. And you can get some good Opensource software from sourceforge.net (but be careful that the project is mature and WELL KNOWN) this cuts the threat of viruses way down. Filter Require Development Status Mature
    7 :
There are a whole range of open source programs and programmers. Many are better built than proprietary programs, many are not. I would recommend OpenOffice as an office suite. It can do almost anything normal people need out of Microsoft Office and is very compatible. Check out Google for a number of Google supported programs such as Picasa, a photo program. For hard core graphic editing, Gimp is comparable to the best proprietary software. And, of course, I'd install Firefox for a better browser experience. One other category is malware. These programs are free or have free versions (for personal use) but are not open source. For a firewall, I use ZoneAlarm. For antivirus I use Avast but I have also heard a number of good things about AVG. For spyware I use SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware. For system file defense, I use WinPatrol. As far as IM, I don't use is so I can't speak from personal experience but I've heard good things about Miranda. If you want to replace Outlook, I would recommend Thunderbird (by the same group that develops Firefox) although I keep my mail online at Yahoo Mail so, again, I am not speaking from personal experience. As another person recommended, if you want to get away from MS entirely, Ubuntu is the easiest Linux distribution to use. I would not be afraid of open source. One person mentioned viruses but you should not see any of these at reputable sites like Sourceforge. What you will see, and what you need to look out for is programs that are not ready yet. Open source tends to release code that is still in testing so that it can be tested by a broader group of people. Look for programs that have gotten past version 1. I would also recommend searching reputable magazines like PC Magazine or PC World for some of their articles on open source and other free programs. Good luck. Who knows, you might find some programs for your own use.
    8 :
I've been using open-source software for quite some time. Many items are quite good. I use OOo, Clam, Firefox, Tbird, among others, no problems, great performance and benefits. I keep up with their forums and even keep installing the latest "betas" and "release candidates". Clam is *very* good about catching viruses. Firefox is a very good browser, and Tbird (plus calendar add-in) is very good for email - if you use offline email. And none is incompatible in file format with "regulation" products! (I've kept copies of "regulation" products around just in case, but don't really need to...) Go to sourceforge.net for ideas on most open-source software

Who can review and critique my college essay for UCF!?!?!? PLEASE HELP!?!?!?

Who can review and critique my college essay for UCF!?!?!? PLEASE HELP!?!?!?
      3. Why did you choose to apply to UCF? 4. What qualities or unique characteristics do you possess that would allow you to contribute to the UCF community? 3) I have known that i want to attend UCF for years. When i was younger my father took my brothers and I around Florida looking at Universities for my brother to attend. Many of the colleges we looked at are now nothing but a blur deep in the depths of my memory bank, but the one institution that has left a permanent foot print in my memory is UCF. With my lifestyle, i like to constantly be active, UCF and Orlando offer many Activities and Organizations to keep me busy. My oldest brother is a UCF graduate, and while he was attending your school, the best weekends were the ones where i got to come stay with him. From always visiting i fell in love with the UCF student lifestyle. My fathers job which allows him to travel all over the world has allowed me to travel with him. Traveling to Europe, Japan, and Brazil all by age 16 has expanded my mind . My travels have opened my mind and i’m all for trying new things. One thing that greatly makes the location of my university important is the skateboard scene. Skateboarding is my passion and through growing as talented as i have become at skateboarding it has allowed me to learn many things and travel many places. Often me and some other skater friends take trips to Orlando, and the skate scene is more vibrant than ever right now in Orlando with the opening of several new skate parks and skate shops in the area. Also Orlando being a major city makes it bountiful with great places to cruise around in the city. Tampa is a hot spot for skateboarding competitions that i compete in and Orlando is just a hop and a skip away from Tampa which make’s competing much more convenient for me. My brother that graduated from UCF has gone on to live an exciting life, and he couldn't have made it to where he is with out the wisdom and knowledge he obtained at your prestigious university. I have seen what a great role model UCF has shaped my oldest brother into, but i have also witnessed first hand what kind of struggles not going to a university can create. My brother that did not attend a University is now still asking my father for money ,is barely making it by ,and regretting not attending a university. My UCF graduate brother just graduated from Columbia University Film School in New York, and is currently in India with his girlfriend. Attending UCF is something that i feel obliged to do so i can further expand my mind and be prepared to make a difference in the world that lies before me. throughout the thousands of universities in the world, UCF’s lifestyle, location, and prestigious academics satisfy my needs as an eager student ready to explore a new world. 4) I plan on really making an impact on the UCF community upon my four years spent attending the institution. I’ve been described as up beat, i’m always the one who’s putting everybody else in a good mood, i look for that one person who isn't having a good time, and i give them a good time. Since i am so up beat, i intend on keeping the UCF community up beat. I am also very active. Every day when i wake up, my goal is to see how many different activities i can achieve in that day. I always like participating and helping out, my nick name at the Goat Ramp warehouse is “eager beaver” because i am always helping out with the skateboard demonstrations just for fun and never ask for anything in return. I am going to be very active in the UCF community and get my hands on as many activities and experiences as i can. I’m Imaginative, ideas flow through my mind like a river. I have always left classmates in awe by how imaginative my mind is. I plan on using my superior imagination towards starting new clubs and organizations, coming up with creative ideas and events to hold, a great imagination is helpful in all situations. Any project that i get my hand’s on, i perfect to the fullest, and i plan on using my tedious habit of always doing things as best as they can possibly be done towards my academics as well as my student community waiting for me in Orlando. I find myself always asking, “how?”. I always want to know how things work down to the final detail, i leave no mental stone unturned when my curiosity wants to better understand something. With no curiosity, many of the inventions and discoveries we have today would not be here, which is why i curiosity plays a vital role in my pursuit of knowledge and experience. I intend on making the University of Central Florida proud to have a student like me who is confident that he will make a positive impact on not just the UCF community but one day the world. -Thank You!! send this around!

I have a question about tax Havens?
I currently live in the Boston area. I have a corporation in the State of MASS, USA. My corporation makes USD150,000 a month. It is an importing and exporting business so there is no physical installations or nothing that makes me stay in the US. I trade goods between Spain and Brazil. Given that USD150.000 is my corporation's margin I can only have a salary of USD100.000 to USD125,000 so the government sees that the corporation is actually making some money. Right now I'm paying 29% as an individual and another 30% as a corporation. What would you suggest me to do in this particular case ? I want to SAVE, Please help. I am a long term resident alien

        2 :
Your level of income is too low for a tax haven corp to make sense. I am not up to date with foreign operations planning techniques but I remember there are some tax savings in setting up a Foreign Income Sales Corp. (FISC) I suggest you talk to a tax adviser that specializes in foreign operations but for now, I don't think you are at the level where a tax haven corp makes sense.

My dad used to work on a luxury cruise ship for 5 years so he travelled the world a number of times. I would love to travel to areas of the world that I've never been to, but the cost seems too high. I want to go to: China Japan Singapore Malaysia Australia New Zealand Brazil Mexico USA Canada I would plan on staying in each country for about 1 week and would like to plan my trip within events eg Chinese New Year, Christmas in Canada etc. I will go with about 4 other people but only be paying for myself. Obviously, I realise that this would be very expensive, so I don't have to go to every country all in one trip. I could do the Asia, North+South America and Oceania trips in 3 separate holidays. Questions: So, going by today's economy, how much do you think it would cost? I plan to create iPhone apps in my own time as I've already had success and make a fair bit of money. If I make £25,000 per year for 3 years at uni and save what I don't spend on rent, electric, gas etc would I have enough money? Do you have any tips? What sort of insurance would I need? Basically, anything you know about travelling the world. If you have any useful links, that'll help too. Thanks!

Basically, the easiest way to travel the world is to have a job that lets you travel, like the way your dad went. With a job then, you would have health coverage, travel paid, and get a salary. Usually you would need to become a specialist in your field, so that you are hired as a problem solver in your field. Or you could go the education route, Or you could get into embassy work. Best to learn a second language and study geography and history, so you have some clue about what is going on, and where things are, lol

          speech help!!!!!pele?
i have to do a speech on pele so here it is Pele was a very famous football/soccer player who was born on the 23rd of October 1940. Pele grew up in a very poor family in Tres Coracos, Brazil. Pele is just a nickname for Edson Arantes Do Nascimento which is why he was given this nickname since he has such a long name. Growing up his parents and friends called him ‘Dico’. He first learned the game football from his dad ‘Dondinho’ who was a centre forward until his career came to an end with a fractured leg. Pele began playing when he was a young boy for a local minor team, when he wasn’t playing he was shining shoes for pennies. He was first discovered at age 11 by one of the countries premier players, Waldemar de Brito. Waldemar took Pele to Sao Paulo and said, ‘This boy will be the greatest player in the world’. He was right! Pele had an immediate impact, in his first game he scored a goal right away at age 16! Pele went on to four world cups with his national team Brazil. Pele was an average sized man but blessed with speed, balance, excellent vision, being able to control a ball superbly, being able to shoot powerfully and accurately with either foot and head. Some wealthy European clubs offered large amounts of money to sign the young Brazilian but the government of Brazil declared him an official national treasure to prevent him being transferred out of the country. Pele said ‘My father was a footballer who once scored 5 goals in a single game all with his head, a record I was never able to beat’. Pele’s statistics are astounding scoring 1,280 goals in 1,360 games second to Arthur Friedenreich who scored 1,329 goals. Pele holds the record for hat tricks scoring 92 in his career. His statistics are even more mind blowing compared to today’s players who struggle to score 30 goals in a season. Pele played for Santos for most of his career retired and then came out of retirement to play for the New york cosmos. Pele in many ways was a complete athlete, with superb skill and agility he could dribble around defenders with ease. Many people regard pele as the best ever player to live. When pele came out of retirement to play for the New york cosmos he became the highest ever paid player but he said he did not do it for the money but to make football truly popular in the United states. Pele, whose nickname does not mean anything, became a Brazilian national hero and was also known as Perola Negra (Black Pearl). His best season was 1958, when he scored 139 times. When pele was young he played with a sock stuffed with newspaper or a coconut as a ball. It took him twelve years to save up enough money to by a real ball. When Pele was at school he was expelled in grade 4 for skipping school to play football in a nearby park. Since he was so poor the only other type of entertainment was to play street football in his neighbour hood with a coconut and bare feet. FINISHED FOR NOW having some trouble adding some more information to this as it only goes for 2:10 min but i need it to be around 3 min im 13 years old so yes i know it aint top quality stuff but what do you expect? any help and corrections i can add plus 50 seconds more.

"Pele is just a nickname for Edson Arantes Do Nascimento which is why he was given this nickname since he has such a long name. Growing up his parents and friends called him ‘Dico’." This football star's given name is Edson Arantes Do Nascimento. Having such a long name provided him many nicknames, including Dico and Pele "Pele began playing when he was a young boy for a local minor team, when he wasn’t playing he was shining shoes for pennies" As a young boy, he was employed as a shoe-shine boy, earning only pennies for his services. In his spare time, he would play football, and he was discovered . . . . "He was right!" This would soon prove to be true (new paragraph) "Pele had an immediate impact, in his first game he scored a goal right away at age 16! " During his very first professional game at the age of sixteen, Pele scored a goal right away. "Some wealthy European clubs offered large amounts of money to sign the young Brazilian but the government of Brazil declared him an official national treasure to prevent him being transferred out of the country." Brazil declared Pele to be a national treasure, preventing his transfer to wealthy european football clubs. "Pele’s statistics are astounding scoring 1,280 goals in 1,360 games second to Arthur Friedenreich who scored 1,329 goals." Pele's statistics are astounding; second only to the great Arthur Friedenreich, with a final tally of 1280 goals in 1360 games; even more so when compared to the football players of today who struggle to earn 30 goals in a season. you need to work on the organization of your essay. it is very erratic and difficult to edit. -shane garst of america

It seems almost finish. You could organize it just a little more. You can organize it chronologically. Anything to do when he was young should be in the beginning not in the beginning and then again in the end. Then just stop redoing it and just practice your presentation. Maybe have a nice picture of Pele to show and a picture of him in game action. If you can wear the type of uniform they wear in the game and carry the ball with you, that would really be creative! Good Luck!

I assume you are going to read all this out so I wont correct your grammar becasue you'll do that yourself tommorrow. The only crticisim I would make is the order in which you provide certain types of information. That is; - put the bit about Pele meaning nothing up the top where you are discussing his nicknames. - put the bit about how he practised as a kid somewhere up near the top so that as you read the story unfolds rather then doubles back for information about the early years. - be a bit careful about using words that are lifted about of books. There is nothing wrong with saying his stats were "astounding" if that is your real words but they sound like you took them out of a book. Also the phrase "Pele in many ways". Just rephrase in your own words if you nicked the idea. Good Luck!
