Is this a good enough Grade 8 valedictorian speech? Stuff to add? I know some of you may find that having a valedictorian in grade eight is a little over the top, but it wasn't my idea. Any suggestions on grammar, ideas to make it longer, or other ideas are greatly appreciated. Sorry if you don't understand some inside jokes, my class will. When you first turn 4 and you realise that you will soon be entering kindergarten, a lot of kids feel excited and rather eager to enter the fun and exciting world of sitting inside a classroom for 6 hours doing endless amounts of work. But I was different. I knew from the start what hard work it would be, and that the excitement would wear off within a few years when you really start preparing for your future. You see, I had been in school before. Occasionally I would poke into my sister’s kindergarten classroom and see her not just playing games and painting pictures, as I had expected, but also learning complicated things such as reading and writing. Now, I’m not saying that school is such a horrible place, but things don’t get a little dry once in a while, and the people I’ve spent the past 10 years with have made it just a little more interesting. There are the Natives, those who have been here since JK, such as I, as well as others such as Caitlyn Ramsay and Mitchell Willoughby, and who I’ve got to know pretty well. Others, such as Danielle Stewardson and Molly Kloss, came in the early grades, and more recently students such as Kevin Kim and Rebecca Hocke have joined us even from countries across the world! Overall, I’ve been able to spend my elementary school life with a good group of people; not a group of druggies or outlaws, but responsible people with good futures. But, of course, there are always some stupid, yet funny, mistakes that students make, such as Adam Schmidt shaving half his eyebrows off just in time for grad pictures (if you look really closely on the composite, you’ll see that Ms. Cha drew them in), Adam Schmidt missing the East Park field trip in grade seven because his siblings didn’t wake him up, and, well… Adam Schmidt’s alter ego Snowflake. And our class has had many students achieve a great deal of honours, such as Nathan Phelps beating out all the grade eights in the Gauss competition when he was only in Grade five, Brecken Spence making it all the way to the provincial track and field competition in ball throw this year, and although not everyone was recognised in such a way, there are many things our class has done as a whole, both locally, such as raking leaves in the fall, and globally, when we collected soccer jerseys for children in Brazil, and collected money for those in need in Haiti. And yet, all of these memories of the past ten years are just a small part of our lives, as little as just 8% of it. For the past year we have been preparing for high school, and this exact moment, which will prepare us for university, which will potentially prepare us for the rest of our lives. I haven’t really thought much about it until just recently when I realised that tomorrow isn’t just another last day of school, where I get 2 weeks of summer, and then it’s back to the comfortable and familiar surroundings of this place. No, tomorrow is the very last day of this comfortable and familiar experience, and then it’s off to a whole new world; the world of lockers, cafeterias, exams, and 70 minute periods. And after that we’ll all split up; some will go to college, others to university and some will go straight to working as a greeter at Walmart, but that’s still okay! And even this year some of us will be splitting up; most of us will be going to Oakridge, but many are going to STA and Central, and other schools. But even as we move away from each other in the coming months, we’ll always have at least one thing in common; that is, that we were a part of the Clara Brenton graduating class of 2010. What makes a person a "liberal" or a "conservative"? Which are you? I noticed over the last years there seems to be a war between the "liberals" and "conservatives". I seem to be both. I vote my conscience and usually split the ballot. I voted for a Democratic president the last two elections, but next election I like one or two of the Republicans and none of the Democrats. I guess I'm liberal about not giving the top 2% huge tax breaks (after Brazil we have the biggest imbalance between the wealthy and the poor). But I am against tax and spend policies. I don't believe it is up to Government to set a moral standard. Politicans are the last people who should claim to know morals. But I also do belive money should be spent to educate people about better moral practices. Can't we all just get along? This is what the problem is with fuel prices in the u.s.a.? the problem is the u.s.government ! they have been protecting the oil companies because they get alot of lobbyists that donate or give them money. also president bush and cheney own and have investments in oil wells so it would not be beneficial to them or the oil companies. the smartest country was Brazil that learned from the 70's oil crisis. as we laughed at them for investing time and money into there infrastructure to grow sugar cane to convert to ethanol. now they are oil independent and will not suffer from market price volatility. we could buy the sugar cane or ethanol from them but of course we have put a tariff on there ethanol making it not attractive to import the reason to protect our farmers which in turn have caused foods to become more expensive. the problem with this country u.s.a. is the people have never been able to organize large enough protests like they do in other countries to demand immediate changes. and as far as the u.s. energy department they have had no real plan to do anything about it because they are sleeping with the oil companies they have no energy policy. Ford and GM also fell asleep and only produced gas guzzling large suv ;s and trucks they are in financial crisis and they want the u.s taxpayers to bail them out. i say no ! there is technology available to make cars and trucks get better gas maileage but the automakers prefer to sell $4000.00 navigational systems instead of making the vehicles more efficient since that would cost them more money. we deserve what has happened because we allowed it. the politicians make more than enough money to buy there gas or i should say the american tax payers pay for there gas and for the u.s. government also. we should tax the oil companies like the u.k did any profits above $60.00 u.s. per barrel of oil will pay a penalty tax to be used for investing in other alternative fuels and to reduce pump prices. exxon paid there c.e.o $350 million dollars salary and retirement package . now do you see the problems ? another problem is the oil companies and stock brokerage firms manipulatig prices. amoco says they had to shut down an oil field that caused prices to go up then ole lorer from morgan stanley said oil prices will reach $150.00 a barrel by july 4th that caused oil to skyrocket by an extra $ 12.00 per barrel in one day. that guy should be shot they should not be able to comment on prices and influence the oil market which they invested in that should be illegal. opec is just laughing at us making alot of money. so lets do something about it and tell our congressman and senators enough is enough. we also need to stop buying so much products from china as this has made there country grow and consume more gas. we should invest in our hemisphere and not theres. energy companies should be allowed to make a profit but what they are making is breaking all of us and should be stopped or regulated of course there lobbyists will pay money so no legislation is passed against them. in 2007 the oil companies made more than $ 123 billion dollars in profit. please reply and let your views be known.
