Is there anyone from Brazil or Rio that can tell me about life down there?

Is there anyone from Brazil or Rio that can tell me about life down there?
I am considering moving to Rio de Janeiro. Can anyone tell me what the job market is like? I have experience as a dance instructor and Waitress. What type of money can you make in the tourist district? How much does housing cost? Is it dangerous for a white girl of 26 to live there? Are there any ballet or other dance schools in the city? What is public transportation like?

Hi! Jane. You don't said us what is your country but, I think may be USA. Sorry, but, only US/UK citizens has too much lack of information about Brazil because the power of your media who insist to classify Brazil among the poor and losers of the World. Poor ignorant journalists... Well, let me answer each question about Rio: (1) JOB MARKET Job market is VERY COMPETITIVE. People must to study at college, get a MBA and have job experience for good vacancies. In your area (dance) you need a previous - comproved - experience. For waitress: many restaurants offer jobs to people with no experience, but is not easy to find one; Universities in Brazil (people studing for a best carrer): www.youtube.com/watch?v=uymIvdBLJZE www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Iov6K9Q8xU (2) MONEY WITH TOURISM You need be an official tourist guide to work in Tourism . Work in a hotel is another good option, but, you need to speak portuguese, Clary, of course. You may be an indirect employee in tourism workin in a cafe/bar, night club, restaurant or another place near tourist attractions; (3) HOUSING Housing is not cheap in Rio, because this is (1) a cith with high HDI level, (2) capitol of the richest state of Brazil and (3) a important tourist place. You need to expend some from $ 500.00 (a single vacancy in a family house) to $ 1.200 Brazilian Real in an apartment. Cheap Housing (vacancy in a family house): //images02.olx.com.br/ui/3/48/88/44564088_4.jpg Apartment for middle class (600 - 1,200 Real montly): http://images.google.com/images?hl=pt-BR&rlz=1I7ADBS_pt-BR&um=1&q=apartamento&sa=N&start=36&ndsp=18 Apartment for high middle class (1,200 to 5,000/month): www.youtube.com/watch?v=evm4Ef9wVPc www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh7vzdXdGmg (4) DANGER X WHITE PERSONS Sorry but this question is not clear for us, Brazilians. In our culture danger has nothing to do with races, but, place. By the way: Rio is a city with some 6 million of inhabitants. 50% are whites. We receive, also, thousand of white tourists every month, so...why Rio could be a dangerous place for whites??? Serious? OMG. Exist hundred, like in any western rich city. (6) PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Depends on where you live. Exist four ways to move into the city using public transportation: (1) Taxi, you can find a lot of these, but it is a little it more expensive; (2) Bus. Cheap but not so good and less comfortableYou find a lot, also. (3) Train. Cheapest but not good; and (4) Metro/subway. The best option. A ticket cost 2.8 Brazilian Real but trains has conditioned air and are fast and safe. job market, theres already ten people trying to get the same job that will most likely work for less than you. dance instructor and waitress are in demand but like i said get in line. your not gana make more than anyone else unless you think of something they haven't thought of yet. all big cities here suck because you got a gang of people in a small area with nothing to do, all rio has is the beach, theres no disneyland or Miniature golf. you want to make money try the small cities next to the big cities. there really no such thing as a white person here, yeah theres a few people with blue eyes but its brazil, you wana see a "white" person go to europe. poeple here like light skinned girls because they somehow see it as a ticket to wealth haha, 99% of people with blonde hair dye it that way. its safe for you as long as you live here like you would in any big city. would you walk in a bad neighborhood at midnight in the states? tell you the truth you could do that in sao paulo, ive done it a thousand times, strolled around the ares that everybodys scared of. i wear nice clothes and take care of myself, if it was dangerous they would have at least tried by now. public transportation is exactly the same as the states.everything here is almost exactly the same as the states but with a touch of catholic =) if you lived here youd laugh at my joke
